Earlier this month, there was one sudden layoff at the Monterey Herald (no advance notice seems to be management’s style there), and three positions lost at its non-union sister DFM paper, the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
Now from the Philly area, we’re hearing about layoffs of one Guild member each at the Pottstown Mercury and the Delaware County Times, along with an undetermined number of non-union employees.
Meanwhile, several DFM papers have announced 3 percent across-the-board raises to non-union employees only. Are they robbing Peter to pay Paul?

Robbing Peter? No, they’re trying to save the sinking lifeboat by throwing journalists overboard. Guess what? The boat is still sinking.
